Building a digitally capable Public Service

The Institute of Digital Government, or IDG, helps public officers build the skills and confidence to use Digital, Data and AI meaningfully in their work.
We bring together practical learning, opportunities to experiment and support for officers to apply what they learn to real problems.
For us, technology is not the end goal. It is to help public officers work better and deliver better outcomes for citizens and businesses.
How change happens
Building digital capability takes more than attending a course. It happens when people have the support to learn, try new approaches in their work and share what works with others. So we work at every level, from leaders and individual officers to teams and agencies.
Start with leaders.
Leaders create the conditions for change. We help them understand what good looks like, ask better questions and recognise where Digital, Data and AI can genuinely help. This enables them to support good ideas and give their teams the time and space to learn and experiment.
Learn by doing.
We start with the problem, not the technology. Officers apply Digital, Data and AI to real tasks and challenges. This could mean trying a new tool, redesigning a workflow or turning an idea into a solution. By testing and improving in context, officers build the confidence and judgement to use technology meaningfully in their work.
Multiply what works.
Good ideas and practices deserve to be shared. We bring officers together to share what they have learnt, so others can adapt useful practices and solutions, build on them and take them further across the Public Service.
Be Useful
We believe learning should lead to something useful.
Technology should solve problems, not create more of them. That is why everything we create should address a genuine need and make a practical difference. It could help an officer complete a task, improve a workflow or deliver a better service.
What matters is not the technology itself, but the difference it makes. That is the standard we hold ourselves to.

These three words capture what IDG is here to enable: public officers learning what is possible, putting ideas into practice and using technology to serve people better.
